NOCP Captain

We are looking to expand our fleet of captains!

Role Purpose:

  • Work with the local Kodiak Ocean Tribe team, NOCP Director and NOCP Co-Coordinators to host the NOCP experience for participants

  • Contribute to the NOCP program by taking participants safely fishing in Kodiak waters

  • Support Captains-in-training (CIT), giving them hands on introduction to boating

  • Share your experience and wisdom with participants

Scope of Responsibilities

Pre-NOCP:

  • In the months leading up to July, meet online with the NOCP staff to connect about programming themes, schedule, expectations, and learn about participants

During NOCP:

  • During the 1 week CIT program (prior to participant arrival), work with other captains to orient and train CITs with basic boat maintenance, safety, maneuvering, and fishing techniques. The week also includes team bonding and preparation for the program.

  • Each captain is paired with a CIT and assigned to a team

  • During the 21 day program, take a team fishing for 16 days.

    • Week 1: 2 orientation days, 2 full days of fishing (8am-4pm)

    • Week 2 and 3: Full fishing days Monday to Thursday, Challenge Days (5am-4pm) Friday and Saturday

  • Participate in morning HDH and morning service and join evening programs.

Post-NOCP:

  • Captain for a community fishing day

  • Captains are invited to participate in a two night overnight with the core staff after participants depart

  • Assist with program breakdown, boat winterization, and clean up

Requirements:

  • Have a passion for fishing, nature, and developing your faith (or be willing to discover it)

  • Be excited to create a encouraging, positive, and spiritual environment for participants and staff

  • Current valid captains license or substantial years of experience. Our primary requirement is experience and safety.

  • Basic fishing experience (you by. no means have to be an expert! and experience in Kodiak waters is not required)

  • Available for 1-1.5 hour Zoom meeting monthly leading up to July

  • Attend the full program; core staff arrive sometime the week of June 14 and depart July 30

  • Workshop leading experience preferred, but not required

  • Past Ocean Challenge/NOCP leadership experience strongly encouraged, but not required

  • All expenses covered by NOCP: Domestic transportation to and from Kodiak is covered by NOCP (roughly $1500) (international applicants will have percentage comparable to a domestic flight covered). Food & lodging. Fishing license ($200).
